Ok, I thought I would be the one answering a lot of questions here rather then asking them but oh well...
So my furry friends my question to you is this: How can I set my desktop background to an animated GIF in windows vista and actually have it animate? I had this working JUST FINE on my old XP but... Vista is trying to make itself difficult... AGAIN ... any help would be MUCH appreciated
Thanks in advance,
-Tamaska

Vista doesn't like animated gifs at all. I don't think there's a way to do it without crippling your desktop.
All I can say is try IrfanView. I know that shows gifs ok within itself, but it also has an option to set an image as wallpaper. I can't say it will work, but you're welcome to try it. One way or another, IrfanView is a handy program to have.

As i said, Vista does not like animated gifs. I've heard of only one solution to the problem and it involves 3rd party software that wasn't even built for Vista AND you have to set your desktop colors to 16bit.

Windows makes backgrounds into bitmaps. bitmaps are not animated. I don't know, maybe you can pull something off with Active Desktop, but iirc even then AD favours jpegs. you don't have any leeway here.

Naw... Doesnt matter I guess.... I was just hoping that maybe I could use whats left of my CPU Nah, there is a way! Right now I have it setup to display my TV on my background(Using a media player program) if they can do that with live tv, then a .gif should be no problem. Its just a matter of finding the right program(By default, no windows wont display .gif but you can modify windows in anyway you want, that's what is so great about it!) ill see if I can find anything... http://www.bestvistadownloads.com/software/t-free-animated-screengif-download-rxbhdkre.htmlAfter a short google search for ".gif desktop in vista" Google is your freind! Edit: It was made for Xp, I don't know it would work for vista, but give it a try non the less

If you have vista ultimate you could convert the animated gif to a video file of some sort and set it as a dreamscene. I have never tried this but i think it should work.
There is also a hack out there to get dreamscene working on nonultimate copy's of vista. I applied it on my laptop and it works great.

Active Desktop was removed from Vista -- they thought the SideBar was a good replacement (BLECK!). It would've been possible that way though.. having done that many times in XP. A possible solution: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/bounty-program-success-active-desktop-replacement-for-vista/This program essentially allows Web Sites as backgrounds in Vista (Active Desktop), so you could create a simple HTML page <html> <body> <img src="myanimatedgif.gif" style="width: x; height: y" /> </body> </html> And use that software, and point it at your simple HTML file. I haven't tried this at home, so I'm not sure if the software allows for local files linking without a server or not, but it's worth a shot! mtn
