Yeah, it's Olympic time again, and as usual, furs tend not to discuss it all that much.

Perhaps one of the biggest issues on Canadians' minds was that our athletes have been very slow to produce any kind of medal-honoured results in these Olympics. There were apparently quite a few disappointments in the pool, especially. Today, that's finally started to turn around, with a silver in the two man sculls (rowing), a gold in women's wrestling, and a bronze in another level on the women's wrestling. There's more to come soon, evidently!

Anyways... What're your thoughts, as Canadians, on the Olympic Games in Beijing? Or even the Olympics in general?

Every olympics I am reminded of an old Royal Canadian Air Farce skit they did with  "a Part of our Heritage" spoof.  I tried finding it in you tube with no luck T_T

Basically the scene is set with a runner crossing the finish line, and he approaches a woman and goes; "So? How did I do?
she replies "Well... you placed fourth"
The man looks pleased and nods, "Well... four is pretty good"

Then it pans to the "a part of our heritage" screen, and the voice over states "Placing just out of the medal running at every Olympics, a part of our heritage."

Sounds about right I think ^_^;

Exactly what happened with the shotput event... Dylan Armstrong finished fourth... out of the medal rankings by a mere centimetre. It was a personal best and Canadian record, at least.

Maybe we just gotta raise the bar on our standards a bit?

It's a part of our heritage! Wink

The only thing i've seen of the olympics so far is a video of a guy from hungary doing weightlifting, whose elbow bent the wrong way. Ouch is an understatement. I never have high hopes as far as medals go. I'm not a big fan of olympics, and the fact that the nazis were the ones to start the whole olympic flame thing and that it actually keeps going today always makes me laugh.

Wikipedia states that the Olympic flame had origins in the ancient Greek times when the games were first done. It was reborn in 1928 for the Amsterdam Olympics. The part that the nazis had originated was the torch relay, to symbolise the nazi ideals somehow or another. I think that portion of it has been bastardised into representing the Olympic spirit in a different fashion since then, anyways.

i remeber for 6 straight years as a kid, trying to understand what was so facinating about the olympics and what was so thrilling abolut it to watch.
Never did.

Its not that i dont understand or care, i just dont follow up on any of it, i jsut hear about the amount of medals we didn't win, and bring myself to laugh at the image we set after this.

We won a medal? Yay! Three? Even better.

I've only watched the Olympics up to the day before yesterday/night. And I fell asleep through some parts of it.

I normally don't enjoy watching sports, but the variety and the caliber of the Olympics and the Olympians is just interesting to watch.  Especially the Gymnastics, those are great to watch.  Olympic Table Tennis for the win!

I didn't expect to win any medals here, I expected for our Athletes to shine in Vancouver, which I'm sure they will.

But the Canadian Olympians that one a medal must've been really happy for winning something for Canada, eh? ( Hell, I bet every medal winner is, just Canadians moreso then some.)

(Edit: Wasn't there a swimmer of ours that missed the bronze by 9/100's of a second? )

*JUMPS UP AND DOWN*  OMG! we got 3 medals...WOOT!....lol not to long ago even Mexico was beating us  Dead

My thoughts on the Olympics:
Here it is in a nut shull my fellow furs Cheesy
Canada dose so poorly in the Olympics because we cannot get the best athletes, why? Because we cant afford them!
All the best athletes are signed for Million Dollar Contracts for whatever team signed them and there still not happy with what they make....SO why would they want to volunteer to be on a Canadian Olympic team for free?

Hell just recently we are offereing bonus award for podium wins lol....1st=$20,000 2nd=$15,000 3rd=$10,000

I love to watch the Olympics and cant wait to go to the 2010 Vancouver Opening Ceremony!

Good idea to make a post about this Benjamin!

Mike Andrew Brown missed the bronze metal by 0.09 seconds in the 200m men's breaststroke. That's probably the one you're referring to. Ugh

We need furry olympics....
Also last time I was in Van with the BF we ended up watching some 80's or early 90's cartoon called animalympics or something like that.
Here ya go! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2Zs3607vQs Cheesy (this is only part one of... 9? D:)

My take on the real Olympics? Just... meh, boring. As others said, it doesn't affect me in any way, and in the end is just another excuse for people from different countries to argue. Though it is kinda nice to know we finally won a few medals.

So Ryan Cochrane swam to a bronze medal in the men's 1500m freestyle.
The Canadian team for Men's Lightweight Rowing got the bronze as well, as did the Women's Pair...
And the Men's Eight Rowing team won the gold medal in their race, redeeming themselves for having not delivered in Athens four years ago.
Not a bad day at all, overall! Finally something in the pool... and we got some of the success in rowing that we're usually accustomed to. Wink

You certainly can't. It was Canada's first Olympic medal in the lightweight women's pair, at least. That's something to be proud of. That particular event was begun in 1996.
