I love my little (20 pounder) baby girl.  She has to live with Grandma till December though Sad  My room mate is allergic to her, but he moves out December 1st.

(bumping this, apologies Ugh)

ive always looked at my pets throughout my life as a member of the immediate family. Even my parents went so far as to suffix our family name to them (last names, so Lucky Harrison, Kita Harrison, etc).

I guess you could say I view our cat as family, but really she's an equal more than we are directly related. She's a housemate to me. Smiley

Being in the vet industry, you start to develop and understand unique relationships with animals.  You are often torn between having your own pets that you want to coddle, spoil, and pamper... and then having to WORK with those pets who haven't learned properly how to interact with suitable behaviours.

For example - its very tempting to spoil and baby a foofoo dog.  VERY tempting...because they're so small and cute, right?  However, we have to step back and remember that this foofoo dog is NOT a human being.  It does not understand democracy, it does not understand reason, it does not understand or comprehend any humanoid concepts that develop in us courtesy and respect.  This dog, if you baby it, will realise that it can use certain behaviours to achieve its survival and pack goals.  AKA - "I will bite anybody who tries to muscle in on my pack" ... and that often ends us being us.

As much as you want to believe so, your dog/cat/hamster will NOT understand your sense of household politics, your deep seeded "need" for love, or your inane sense of democracy.  *Chuckles*  We need to learn and interact with a critter brain.

You know, and im being serious here, that sounds like the standard youth of today really Ugh

actually, i find this quite untrue in the form of Dogs and sometimes cats.
We trained both of my dogs the ins and outs of our house and how we operate as a family, and they totally understood everything.
You just need to treat dogs like their little kids with a learning dissability, no im serious, if you force the behavioral info into their brains, unless their totally inept, theyll eventually get it.

as for Cats, its really hit or miss, i was blessed with a cat that had the same understanding of the house rules as my dogs did.

however, much anything else, wont really Ugh i tried with a rabbit once, holy hell, what a headache.

Rats are the way to go - solid, noble, social by nature, dense creatures that are happy to just eat and nibble at your toes.

Though when I pick up that snake in a couple weekends I gotta teach the my cat and sisters cat that it is a animal to be feared since I will beat their hides xP Of course sisters cat already fears me and everything that is mine and avoids even fighting my cat, because of the amount of fear I poured into that one cat XD So I am sure my cat which catch on in less then a day xP

Feared as in, the snake can eat them with relative ease as well XD

My family has two dogs, a cat and I own three gerbils and they are my buddies.  It's great to walk into the house and have two beagles and a chatty cat come up to the door to say hello. Wink
