I prefer to be supportive and respectful of people's decisions even if they're young and it might not be the best choice they're making. I'll certainly let them know if I think they're doing something badly, but I won't berate them over it.

How are people supposed to be respectful of others, if they don't get any, themselves?

 Ah yes.

The old EXPECT RESPECT canard. Dan, it appears that you, like the folks that came up with that particular campaign, are using the word "respect" as a synonym for "common courtesy".
They are not the same thing, and have never been.

Common courtesy and decency are indeed things that everyone is entitled to unless they have lost the right to deserve or expect it. Respect, however, is a much higher level of interpersonal regard, and it is something that's earned.  Same with trust.

Random strangers are entitled to neither of those things. Unfortunately, the words "respect" "trust" and "friendship" have been carelessly bandied around so much over the past number of years that they have become diluted and have lost all their meaning.

Just like folks feel entitled to empathy rather than sympathy (but that's an entirely different argument).

Semantics. :3

I'd probably call what you're describing, "reverence," but I think you are using the word, "respect," with more accuracy. Thanks.

I think we understand each other anyway, though. :3
