Even though this will mean little to most folks on here, I was saddened to learn that Andrew Gold had passed away at the age of 59 a few days ago.

His biggest hit: 'Thank you for being a friend' is one of the songs I associate with my earliest discoveries of the Fandom, and the good friends I made during those heady days in the mid nineties. In particular, I remember that song as being on the radio the very first time I logged into furryMUCK.

This is a live version, and his voice was showing the strains of age, but it was a good performance nonetheless.

That is sad. I never heard this news myself!
It's an awesome song. 59 isn't really that old. Just makes me wonder sometimes as we grown who we are going to loose next, that might be depressing but it's something to keep in mind that way you have no regrets of time not spent when whomever passes on.

I looked at the youtube video again, and some of the more recent comments are not surprisingly saying things like 'Thank you for being our friend, Andrew'.
Generally, I've always found that when people try to use a departed artist's own works or words to frame a tribute, it tends to come across as trite, cliché, or contrived.
What I find odd is that in this particular case, it actually works out quite well, and comes across as sincerely as he had meant the song when he wrote it.

Indeed.  Thank you for being our friend, Andrew.

Mm.. he's got a lovely heartfelt voice.  Hopefully he led a good life.

An appropriate song for finding the fandom, it seems.
