For me one of the biggest draws of anthro is that it was something conventionally different, yet you weren't alone in drawing anthro, since there is a plethora of various anthro artists as well, all of whom bring different techniques and styles to the table. It allows for a sort of niche art community that one can appreciate.

The downside is the majority of your friends will think it's "creepy" and "weird" and just shake their heads and ask "Why can't you just draw people like everyone else?"

I never understood that question actually. I don't draw people because, well, i don't WANT to draw people. I rather draw anthro. Why? Because it's more fun for me. Art is should be enjoyable. Why would I draw something I don't want to draw? Of course you could say "Money" but that's not exactly a big draw for me.

Anyway, what are some of your pros/cons when it comes to anthro art?

For me the biggest PRO is that it is a Challenge Cheesy (and Fun:P). I love how you can Combine Human and Animal together to form a beautiful new Form yet (for me) Keeping "Realistic" in that I try and make sure if said Creature evoled it would why would it be like "this". And also becuase People are BORING to say the least Wink

Biggest Con? ya most don't get it and it can be very Wierd, but then again, what is weird? Wink

well, the issue i see usually (though this was more an issue with my demon babes) is "dude, why does she have horns and a tail?!? she's hot and all, but that's just f***ed" this is usually followed by "dude, could you draw me a set of boobs? like just the boobs...."

and this is why i don't draw around mechanics anymore...

My biggest explanation for anthro art is that you can't exactly do it wrong; in the sense that there are no 5'10 anthropomorphic hyenas running around name Thorn. I mean, some artist draw anthro art and portray their characters with 4 digits as opposed to 5, some draw digitgrade, others plantigrade, some have head fur/hair styles, while others dont.
It's magic for me personally; and there are still so many avenues to travel as we explore this art style.

A big pro for me in drawing anthro is the fun...I rarely get a lot of joy from drawing much else, and I enjoy the varieties and combinations that one can have!
The con, however, comes with the fact that, often, they don't look particularly realistic when I draw them. I would prefer to have my anthros look somewhat more realistic, and move my style a little more toward realism, but I have a difficult time of practicing it. Kind of like doing math problems so you can run off and join your friends in eating cake...you know you should be doing the math, but all you really want to do is eat the cake!

There are some really great posts here.  Smiley

Usually you just have to grin and bear it when drawing in public, or in a place where non furs will see you. Usually a witty comeback or a threat to eat their children will send them on their way.

Its fun to see what can come out of someone's imagination, or the way someones mind can twist or even create a form from scratch on paper.

The pro for me is that it is a creative outlet that lets me flex my brain meats and allows me to see what comes out. It also helps me relax, and let loose. I also can't draw people to save my life, I find anthro much easier.
It also gives me the chance to try and play with new mediums, which is always fun :3

Cons: Uuuuhhhhhmmmmmmmmm... When drawing nude, but non sexual models and studying the form, most people get up in arms about it. Especially if its anthro. Because of our society, we are made to feel like we should hide ourselves, or be ashamed of what we are. That the naked body is something taboo. And of course, that means the study of a form, or even experimenting with a form on paper can also be frowned upon.
Not saying that I want to be able to draw porn on a city bus everyday without getting awkward glances, but to not be judged by what resides in a sketchbook would be nice.

But people are going to think what they want and thats that. Life goes on, can't please everybody, so why limit yourself and the things that bring you enjoyment just because someone doesn't get it?  Wink

When my friends/family ask why I draw anthro art, I always say because you only have to be 50% good at drawing humans and animals to make a 100% good anthro (not really true, but it shuts them up, also I almost failed math)

I like that you can draw them naked without creepy comments too...

A con would be trying to pose digigrade legs, ergggg!
