1. What do you guys listen to in general? 2. Do you have any favourite genre's or bands? 3. What are you listening to right now?
I used to be into metal up until a few years ago when I developed more of an interest in progressive/avant garde music as well as psychedelic and experimental rock. My favourite genre is probably experimental and at the moment my favourite band is Porcupine Tree. Listening to Jupiter Island by Porcupine Tree as I am typing this.

Oh silly me, did not realize there was already a post about it.
Nightwish is pretty awesome, they are one of the few metal bands that I still like to listen to these days.

What's your favourite song from them? I have to admit my favourite song from them is the least metal of all of theirs. The Islander http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5juc6fmgylw

all of your musical tastes make me shudder as they're all such poppy overplayed bands that have next to no originality and all sound so similar it makes my head spin.
sorry if I sound rude but 95% of my music collection (constantly growing) is stuff that not a lot of people have heard of, 'popular' bands drive me insane and make me want to tear out my eyeballs, as for genres I like everything any everything with an exception to Rap and Country, but I like select few artists from both of those as well, I am VERY picky in my music, I often only like a single track by an artist and hate every single other song by them or off a CD, only the best of the best gets into my collection, my favorite genres are metal (and the MANY sub-genres including Folk Metal, Progressive, Celtic Metal, and Power Metal :B) and electronica and it's RIDICULOUS amount of subgenres (everything from breakbeat/breakcore to trance to hardcore to just about anything)
my music collection spans everything imaginable really
again sorry if I sound rude about your musical likes, I just prefer not to be a mindless drone to pop culture's offspring in music (I prefer originality over repetitive overplayed stuff that 'everyone likes')
~S
Yikes. That's like, all my pet peeves right there, in a single post. Will try to remain as calm and civil as possible, here -- People's taste can differ from yours, and the popularity of an artist should have absolutely no bearing on one's enjoyment of it. The fact that most people haven't heard of a given band means nothing in terms of how inherently good they are. That kind of attitude just comes off as extremely pompous no matter what. I urge you to better accept others' tastes. Chances are that they just like the music, no strings attached. My tastes range from incredibly obscure bands I've stumbled on over the years to huge, big-name 'pop' acts. Music is music and it's all there to be enjoyed (okay, admittedly some of it's there to make money, but even that be legitimately enjoyed), and your disregard for that simple fact offends me. You come off as extremely elitist and unintelligent, even if you aren't truly like that. I highly recommend that you change your views to be more accepting. Just my thoughts, there. Also, I find myself saying this a lot, but many people who say they like "everything but rap and country" (those words, verbatim, I've heard more times than I care to think about) haven't even really heard a fraction of what defines either of those genres. Not in every case -- I'm not necessarily accusing you, keep in mind -- but many. again sorry if I sound rude about your musical likes, I just prefer not to be a mindless drone to pop culture's offspring in music (I prefer originality over repetitive overplayed stuff that 'everyone likes') Sorry if I sound rude about your musical views, I just prefer to be true to my own personal tastes (I prefer whatever I personally consider to be good music over selective elitism for the sake of false superiority) ...Okay, yeah that last part was rude of me. Sorry. Nothing against you personally, ShadowKitten, but your views offend me and you aren't coming off as very accepting (which, really, is a pretty huge part of the community, isn't it?). ~Josiah

Josiah: You made me think of why I "Hate" country, I guess it's more of a Dislike. Hate is a strong word, and I admit, there are some... "some" (very few) Country songs that are exceptible, and sometimes fun. But just becuase I dislike country, I hope you didn't see me as pompus to. I don't hate people for Listening to Country, I'll just ignore that. They have a right to listen to it and anything they want. ShawdowKitten: Big name bands are never original? well do you think The Beatles have no "originality" eh? I would never say that. They experimented with all kinds of things during their time and made some Wonderfully new and and Original songs. That is why so many love them, even after their "Genre" has change over the past 40 odd years. Their are a lot of "big name" bands that have real meaning and soul to thier music. I also admit, there are bands out there just to exploit and make money and never have any meaning to thier music. But not all do. anyways, this topic has gone off a Bit. and I think we could all Blow off some steam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8fI-dGWT74 Wonderful Music.

I was raised on old school country and rock n roll, so I usually find myself drawn more to older songs than to the newer stuff.
I do listen to a bit of everything, though some music I have to be in a very specific mood to enjoy.
And Josiah?
Bravo. ^.~

Nah, of course not! That's not really what bothered me about his post, just an afterthought since I see that same phrase -- "everything but rap and country" -- so often. It's kind of funny after awhile, really. I'm not a huge country fan myself, though I do listen to some music that could be classified as such here and there, but what I was getting at was that there's so much to the genre, it'd be kind of like saying "I don't like any rock music," y'know? It's a lot more than just the twangy, whiny stuff you might hear on the radio. Not that it's a big deal though, just something I like to mention when I hear that. Certainly someone could have legitimately given the whole breadth of the genre a chance and decided it wasn't for them. anyways, this topic has gone off a Bit. and I think we could all Blow off some steam Yeah, you're right. My apologies. (although, thanks for the support, Ruby ) ~Josiah

Also, this statement is unerringly true.
I do listen to some country. The country I listen to, I really quite enjoy.
However, I could have very happily lived my whole life without ever hearing "HonkyTonk Badonkadonk"
No genre is ever entirely awesome or entirely made of suck. A genre is a spectrum of colors from black to white, and every shade in between. It can never be described with a cut and dried statement.

Haha, the title alone is pretty much all you need to hear. I'm extremely fond of Denver Folk/Americana/Gothic Country/whatever you wanna call it -- I've never heard a constant label for it, but it's very unique style and I love it dearly. Stuff like this: Munly and the Lee Lewis Harlots - Gentleman's JihadMunly and the Lee Lewis Harlots - Big Black Bull Comes Like a Caesar (the storytelling in this song is absolutely fantastic but nearly impossible to make head or tail of; that's part of Munly's wonder, in a way) 16 Horsepower - Black Soul ChoirVery haunting in many ways, a lot of it. ~Josiah

The Arrogant Worms I found them by accident. The name sounded like a heavy metal band, but was pleasantly surprised to discover they are a comedy/folk group. "Night in Dildo" (Yes that's an ACTUAL place in Newfoundland...) is my favorite song by them. I do listen to a wide range of music. Country, Rock, Folk and so on.

Haha, oh wow... that... huh. I would say thrash (the genre of punk, not to be confused with thrash metal), but all bets are off with that whistling section and reggae breakdown. ~Josiah

Rambo: A, yes. Night in Dildo. Good song (all real places in the whole song). The Last Saskatchewan Pirate was the first one I heard from them, and is still my Favourite from them . Josiah: Ya, the whistling and reggae parts throw me off to. It's and "Interesting" "song" but funny how it's put together. I found it while looking for Funny cars. The song was the Funny part about that video.

*falls out of chair laughing* hahaha.. that's a win. When I need some inspiration I listen to stuff from "back in my day", call me a child of the 90's, but this song is always epic for me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV-hSgL1R74It's a slow warm up, but if you want to cut to the chase, come in at 2:00 For fun I listen to Gogol Bordello, I agree with a lot of you that mainstream stuff just drives me crazy on my personal time since I listen to the same 50 songs almost every gig I DJ. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWYTyfQe-o8Gypsy Punk!
