Ok, I have had it with dell... That Laptop was my last one ever!!! My laptop has to be the biggest critic, every time I tried to write more of my fav novel it bluescreens or just restarted on me. and about 4 months ago (due to it MAJOR overheating problem) Melted! Everything was fried from overheating... and oh joy it did again. So I am looking for a new laptop (NO DELLS!!! NO APPLES!!! NO HP!!! Don't even try to suggest those Companies please) I would appreciate any suggestions on a Company. Tell me what your experiences have been and please send suggestion for a new laptop. I just can't pick laptops... Everyone i pick ends up shooting me in the foot. I need a laptop with alot of memory. Long Battery life, Durible and can handle University life. (oh, and not a critic!)

ASUS - they do tend to skimp on initial releases, but they do fix things. The 1215N supply is trickling in now- 7ish hour battery life, 12", tops out at 2.8GB RAM (which might just be a software OS limit) ACER - they are the low end of the good/decent computers. Better than HP/Compaq. Toshiba - Fairly solid, some bad models. Lenovo - I'm partial to IBM's and Lenovo is carrying their weight fairly well. They still have the best when it comes to physical abuse, assuming we ignore the $6000 ToughBook or whatever it's called from some other company. Fujitsu - they make the LifeBook, which is Apple-expensive, but usually a solid computer.
All of these carry the standard bloatware that's usually not too hard to dispose of.

Thank you for the Advice. It seems so far I keep hearing that ACER & ASUS are good laptops. I use to love my Compaq, I swear that laptop could survive the next Ice age... But it didn't survive falling onto Crowchild X_X. I got the Dell insiron as a gift after that... never had such a... "Pain in the Ars" laptop. Well I'll save my pennies and might have to did into my travel savings. but I will keep an eye out for those laptops you mentioned. Thanks agian for your Advice.

Ah, another good thing about Asus, they have their one year "ADW" warranty, in other words, it covers PHYSICAL damage, moisture damage, stepping on it damage, dropping off of your roof damage, and even putting your fist through it damage! for the first year, then a standard warranty for another year after (TWO YEARS!!! not bad eh?) : D ha ha its epic! i just sold a guy a really nice one today, look into their K25JRX2 model <-- 4 GB of 1066 ram, 640 (i think) HD, an I3 Processor, and Built in ATI 1GB graphics, not a bad little machine.

Well lucky me, I got my fathers old laptop though some terms. But I got his old ASUS Eee PC. It will take some time to get use to this SMALL keyboard but it has most of my needs. As long as i can keep writting my novels I'm happy for now. Thanks for your help, I'll keep it in mind for new laptops (If i don't like this one, but why replace something that aint broke? )

As I worked for them directly for years, HP has very reliable laptop hardware wise, but their software is crap, so as long as your prepared to spend a efw hours removeing preinstalled crap you get good bang for your buck

HP is just Compaq with slightly better guts. The hardware will fail a year after the warranty expires, instead of the day after. Or you could go find an old 386 HP that still works. They've certainly gone downhill over the years.

yeah that is true.. Though the compaq brand name has kind of been assigned to their lower end economy models....this is where you need to watch out.. The higher end stuff is rather durable, but the Hard drives they use in the budget models are crap and tend to fail... stay away from models with a seagate hard drive.. warranty was, I do recommend the extended with Accidental damage protection.... get rid of all the trial ware and HP software crap and you've got a nice machine at a fair price.

I'll never go back to HP, Their on my DEATH List! Sure their not that high on my list, but still high enough that I won't ever trust them agian. But out of the Computer companies their the Lowest, Apple and Dell are still Extremely high on the Death list. So far this Eee PC is nice, It's nice having a laptop that dosn't burn my lap.

The Toughbook that was mentioned above is actually by Panasonic, available at London Drugs. Carrying handle is nice to have, as well as rubber port covers, like they had on their shockwave audio line. The first time I saw one, was in the repair shop... buddy deleted stuff he shouldn't have, and needed windows reinstalled. I liked it, because I could read it in the sun outside! Most laptops you can't do such a thing, or it creates shadows and blurreyness... Lenovo/IBM is high on my list, mostly because they primarilly use the trackpoint instead of the touchpad. I hate touchpads. But, durability is all there... They hybernate instead of bluescreening when they overheat, and some of them have hard drive protection. "Shock detected, parking hard drive heads!" I still have a dell, myself. I've seen the overheat crackle pop in the inspiron line, but not in the lattitude line. Oh, and little known fact from someone who used to work for HP: Compaq's hardware is definately better than HP's, but after the merge, the presario and the pavillion laptops are exactly identical in every way... HP hardware, though some of the Compaq's have JL sound. The Compaq EVO line is the only laptop that still has true Compaq hardware. But on the other hand, I would not recommend anything from that company or any of its subcompanies to anyone. Hence why I don't work for that company anymore. Watch out for Alienware, they're dells in disguise.

Thanks for the more info, If this ASUS dosn't work out than maybe something else. But i should say it's almost been a whole MONTH and i have not gotten mad at this laptop ONCE! It has not crashed once on me and dosn't overheat, it dosn't even get warm! Also I know about those dells in disguise, and yes... please stop reminding me about Compaqs, I had one before HP bought them and I LOVED IT that laptop was the best i ever owned. But nothing today comes close to what that old one had. 2000-2006 R.I.P. my little Compaq that could survive another Ice age... but not landing on Crowchild.

Im using my GateWay laptop right now. Gateway is owned by acer and while I had problems with my Acer Pc (Was running vist ) but I have had this laptop for a year and there has been no problems with it. Though, I do suggest getting some form of external hard drive, I have a 2 terabite free agent next to me that workds great, and just make sure you keep 200Gbs free and she runs like a beauty! PS: For anyone using vista! STOP! Getting window's 7 could be the thing that saves your computer! Windows vista, as much as it looks good, kills PCs! XD While that last part sounded funny, I truly do reccomend moving up to windows seven, or even back to XP, Vista has been nothing but trouble and is truly a headache waitting to... no not waitting to, a headache that has happened. Thank you windows 7!

Those Eee pcs are nuts, my buddy uses his for gaming/hacking And mine (well the family's) survived flying off the roof of my dads car. damage was cosmetic, we'll, the charging system got effed, but if you get the cord in the right position it works. Now if it only came with 7 instead of me having to upgrade.

two words friend: i and Pad
I was a major PC nerd for years and years until my boss forced me onto a macbook, now I can't even use my Toshiba without cringing. His two year old son even got an iPad (with his own birthday money) and I can't get over how the kid can use it. Just imagine how smart that kid is going to be. He's just a little over three now and he can already read and write to a degree.
My Toshiba Qosmio has gone through hell and back though, I'll admit. I bought it to play Second Life and within months it couldn't even keep up with that. Survived a lot of impacts though.
I used to do tech support for HP - until they sent out a memo regarding a design flaw in a product where the screen would crack under the slightest pressure. We were explicitly directed to refuse any warranty unless "the customer screams and/or cries". I quit that week.

I also have an acer netbook that is only a few months old but has been dropped a few times and stioll works like new. me pc is farily new so not sure how is will hold up, but for the price I would go with acer.

The iPad is not a laptop. It's not designed for input, so it's pretty easy to see how a young kid can let Apple tell them what to do and how to do it. It does work well in that respect. Kids learn by watching and listening to their peers.

Yes yes, fair enough. I agree to disagree on Apple, but HP is crap.
For some reason I have a fear of Acer because of it's original reputation for shoddy hardware but that was a long time ago. My mom just got one six months ago and she loves it, and the price was amazing.
