All of you know what I mean when I say mate... it's usually preceeded or followed by Lykos. ^_^
Close friends are called friends. I don't know what else to call them.
Mate still can mean close relationship... not neccessarily sexual in any way.

Dictionaries are books that take the commonly accepted definitions to words that are commonly accepted to be part of the English language.
Oxford dictionary has recently added d'oh (from the Simpsons) and other such 'social and current world' words that would have been unceremoniously rejected due to their specific references previously in history.
Dictionaries, especially ones that are updated every 3 months to represent 90% of the population will inevitably not have new words or words that are used by the other 10%.
So really, the people who think that dictionaries are good resources are correct in that common definitions are definitely covered, but those who think it's a not good resource, are correct in that the more vague or specialist definitions are not covered.
Human culture has been assigning their own definitions to words for millenia. They're not going to stop now. We all have our own personal dictionaries, and so long as we know how to read each others' dictionaries and / or clarify confusion, nothing is wrong with that.
Regardless, I think mate is a great word to use to describe a relationship. I still use the conventional 'girlfriend' and 'fiancee', but I think that's more to mesh in with common culture's definitions of the words as opposed to my own.

Curious, does anyone here wish to ever live in a wolf-pack style household or has done so? Anyone tried any other type of group-living other then apartment roommate-style living?
I want to do so when I'm older as I've discovered trying to have a pack without my own home is too difficult. Might try again in 2 years once I'm done school & have my own home. But, I wanna know how it went for others; any problems they had, what kinda rules, non-sexual or sexual, if anything changed when someone in the pack had children with their mate etc?

Wolf pack style could mean a lot of things. A group home is one concept, primarily focused around just being a 'household' with different couples and families within it. I imagine that there's a great deal more emotional and group mentality associated with the concept you have in mind though.

I suppose to me, relationship is compromise and understanding.
With all that other good stuff thrown in.

Got another question & other should feel free to post their questions in this thread too!
Anyone trying out a "pet" or "feral" lifestyle? Either non-sexual or not. I know some non-furs enjoy dressing as "sex-kittens" or "ponies", so why wouldn't there be furs who like to be like to be their fursona?
p.s. Using the term "feral", to mean that either 1 or both of ya pretend to be a wild & actual animal, not just some anime catgirl pet thing.

I love being feral, it's the only way i can actually feel truly in my nature... a tiger is supposed to be wild anyways.

Yes, I don't mind having my feral moments, as I try to balance a healthy doze of it in and out of my day.

Lets see... my cub loves when I pretend to be a dog... or a monkey (he really loves that one). He gets all full of giggles then runs away. I chase after him of course. It's a good way to drain his energy! (and he has a lot... )

Oh noes! *giggles* I honestly mix my feral nature with my actual nature. I'll laze about on hot afternoons, purr when I'm scritched and all that, but I don't think I can ever quite tune myself all the way down to a feral critter. With respect to pet relationships, yeah, my significant others and stuff collar me in something like a similar role, just not as animal themed as I think was intended.
