3 easy steps to help make better forum posts: 1. If you use firefox. There is a simple spellcheck function already built in that underlines words with red lines. This isn't showing your knowledge of that word. It is showing that you possibly may have mistyped it. If so simply right click on that word and firefox gives you a few possible spellings for the word it thinks you are trying to type. It may not list alot but it can help make you seem alot smarter in posts in the spelling department. Since no one cares about grammar on the net. Amirite? 2. With threads that contain lots of images. I know alot of the pictures may be pretty, colorful, sexy, cool, etc. but we don't need to see the same image posted 2-5 times a thread because of quotes being used as seen in the following example: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original poster:
Yaktity yak yak.
 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second poster:
Yaktity yak yak. LOL! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Instead if your post is simply right after his just post your comment! Since most people will assume it applies to the latest post! Or if its more then two posts down try a formula such as adding a "@" followed by the posters name then a ":" to indicate you are trying to make a message to him. Or simply just delete the image from the quote. Here are some examples to learn from: EXAMPLE 1: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second poster:
LOL! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Example 2: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second poster:
Yaktity yak yak.
LOL! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------EXAMPLE 3: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second poster:
@Original Poster: LOL! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3. Make posts with more then one word in the response such as "Lol". Because obviously we know when a previous post was funny. So instead try to make a more intelligent post such as adding something on the end of that "Lol" As seen in the next example: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second poster:
@Orignial Poster: LOL I liked the irony displayed in that picture! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4. Learn to edit posts instead of double - triple posting. Alot of members may not know about this feature. But there is a icon only on your posts. That says "modify" in the top right hand corner of the post you choose to edit. Then simply alter the post to your own will. Fix any typos, update, clear up any misunderstandings, etc. The list of uses is immense! But if its a thread that hasn't seen the light of day for weeks to months then go ahead and make another post after yours if you were the last one to touch it. To preform what many internet posters call a "bump" which pushes that said topic to the top of the forums for everyone to see once again! With these 4 easy steps you yourself can seem more intelligent! Edit: if this post is a good PSA I think the mods should move it to the Ligers Roar's board for all to see! Agreed! :3 *thumbs up* -TJ

Obviously someone's as annoyed with the quote quirks as I am. Another idea is, when you quote someone, crop the quote down to what you're replying to. Example: Original Poster's Message: Hi there. I'm a furry who plays guitar. I also play video games. Second Poster's Message: I also play video games. Really? What games do you play? See how neat that was? And if it were a long post, you wouldn't have to hunt through the quote for the piece that was replied to. This comes in handy, with multiple quotes as well.

A couple of other helpful hints: 1) Proofread your writing, just in case you happen to find a discrepancy. Such as: Title of thread "4 blah blah blah" and writing in thread "3 blah blah blah." 2) "Alot" is not a word. You don't say "alittle," "alame" or "alaundry." 3) Understand the difference between Their (as in, their stuff, their car, their child), there (over there!), and they're (an abbreviation of "They are"). As well as Than (Better than, greater than, worse than) and Then (come over here, then!). Sorry, Wula, I had to. But really, good post! I love it when people use good grammar and stuff! Makes me happy! And yes, if everyone else agrees, perhaps we could put it up for those new-to-forum people, like I used to be? (I didn't even know there was a modify button!)

I think there's a distinct line between discouraging posts such as "OMG these pix maek mah eyes bleed LOLZ!" and attempting to enforce a formatting standard. Unless the PHP enforces restrictions on quote length or minimum post sizes, you will not find success in creating a certain flow and format.
Frankly, I don't want to read a forum where everyone follows form and function. It would be boring, and I don't visit to be bored. I certainly agree on points made about spellcheck and the like, because after all, this function is built into your browser. If you spelled something wrong, you'd know about it. But frankly, I could care less how people format their posts or responses, as long as I don't have to wade through an endless sea of LOLWUT. If you want to respond to a post with "LOL!", why not? A forum is, in function, a discussion board, and in a discussion with a real person would you not laugh out loud? Just because others know it's funny, doesn't mean you shouldn't respond with your opinion. That's like realizing something on this forum offends you, but because it must have offended others as well, you're not going to bring it up. How many times has that ever happened around here? You'd have better luck plugging the leak in the Titanic with tensor bandages than you would keeping an offended fur's mouth shut.
I'm not offended. I just think that if one has a problem with the formatting of the forum, it's not the rest of our jobs to ensure you're kept happy. (Though you could try talking to Ben).

(EDIT: Drewdle beat me to it. Original post below) Some good points re: quotes and all that, but I don't know about turning the forum into an English class for those who don't meet a few folks' personal standards. I appreciate good grammar and spelling as much as anyone, but I certainly don't think it's a major requirement for posting at all (to a point-- obviously if your post is difficult-to-impossible to read due to lack of punctuation, mangled typos, etc. then you may want to rethink your approach). Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me, or a few people's pet peeves as opposed to a major forum issue, I dunno. Sure, I've seen plenty of typos and grammatical errors but nothing that makes the post incomprehensible or sends me into a fit of rage or anything. ~Josiah

When members from this forum and others try to have a conversation with me I kinda ignore, wave them off, or simply block them. Since mainly the huge thing that drives me nuts is the quoting part >:C And I am sorry to say this. But because of your actions Blue-Vulpine I am ignoring you from now on with this forum till you edit that quote out of your post. This may sound crass, but if you simply ignore any user who might have slightly irritated you, then you may actually be missing out on some stimulating discussions, or some insight or point of view that you may not have thought of before.
There are people that irritate me here, as there are and will be in real life for the remainder of my time here. Just because they irritate or anger me does not mean that they are a total loss, and even they have their (rare) comments or opinions that I can either agree with or ponder on to broaden my own horizon.Since it must really suck for those people. My initial and only reaction to that statement is Awwww, muffin!
I understand having a slow browser, or an old system. Honestly, I do. However, if they want to browse furry.ca, they will find a way. One topic started by an irritated user over mediocre forum manners isn't going to move a mountain, so this thread is really not going to help those "poor people" anyway.

Actually, I quite agree with the vendetta against quoting an image. Especially when a later poster quotes the original image AND the already-once-quoted image, making an aggravating threesome of repetition.
..Also, speaking of threesomes, I was at work today, and we were recieving training from this fifty-something and somewhat rotund fellow in a hardhat (Towards whom I have no hard feelings and actually a lot of respect; he was a great guy), and Britney Spears's song 'One Two Three' came on (which is ostenatiously about a threesome involving her and two other guys), and the image of this guy, one of the other skinny thirty-something foremen, and Britney Spears plus about thirty years, all in overalls and hardhats, (and nothing else) trying to position themselves for an awkward threesome at the front of the room came to mind. They were all singing and trying to make a music video at the same time, of course, and I just thought '.. Oh, Brain, why do you make me see these things?'
TJ, you're still hilarious.

Yeah. Um. Less of this would make for a better forum.

Like god damn if I had mod rights I would totally mod so many posts to get rid of seeing multiple images in a thread. I do it occasionally when it gets too out-of-hand, mostly for the sake of those with old computers. We can't just go around changing things willy-nilly, though. (Well.. we could, but it really wouldn't make for a very good forum.) On occasion, when I first started out, I'd hit 'edit' instead of 'reply' to someone's post by accident (since they used to be beside each other on the old boards), and then unfortunately overwrite someone's entire post. Luckily, it was reversible in most cases with a quick back button.
