Even though I haven't been able to get to AC, I can sympathise with Kage a bit.
I know how it is to be organizing and running a (fairly) large scale event, and I can honestly see his point of view on this matter. The stress is incredible, and we are all our own worst critics, so any flaw will seem huge, and the accomplishments seem miniscule. Adding to that the level of bitching some people do, and the continual tension of trying to make things run smoothly, and it leaves you pretty drained. Not to mention that you are too damn busy to really enjoy the event you just worked your ass off to pull together.
I wonder if Kage answered you the way he did because he was at the event, and the fatigue was still a factor. I'm curious as to whether he would answer those questions in the same way if he was asked them in a month or two.
Not having met Kage personally, I can't really comment as to his personality, but it seems reasonable that a huge portion of the admiration directed at him is from his considerable accomplishments. The fact that he had the balls to start AC in the first place, and the perserverence to keep it running is pretty impressive.
That's my take on it, anyhow.
