Hokay, so...My last fursuit..It...Never got finished. Mostly because I've found a better technique, and I kinda screwed up. The head was too big for me, and I wasn't happy with it. I messed up the body by making it fit too good...Cause Lemmy (my bat fursona) is a guy, and it doesn't make sense if he has curves so ........... ANYWAYS! I've finally started on a fursuit using balaclava. I quite like it, and behaves nicely. Jaw movement isn't as good as plastic mesh, but I'm really liking balaclava. I find it's easier to give the fursuit emotion. The fursuit will be a wolf. Yeah, I know, everyones dog has made a wolf fursuit, but I thought I'd spice it up a little and make this wolf RAINBOW!! If theres any foam ya think I should trim down or something, please tell. I personally think I should maybe shorten the muzzle. I'll get a reference picture up sometime. I still gotta color it, but I'm pretty sure you guys can imagine what a rainbow wolf looks like.

Looking good so far, but I agree with you about shortening the muzzle. Not only will it look even bigger after the nose and fur are added, but it'll probably wind up being weighed down a fair bit, too. You could probably take off a good two or three inches and it'll still turn out fine (if not better). Just my $.02, though.

I'm gonna be trimming the fur around the face once it's furred (thats just common sense (right?)) so it won't look as big, but I think I will trim down the muzzle since the layer of fabric will bump it up. With it's current state, I think it kinda looks like an alligator, so shortening it would do good.

The muzzle is a great shape. I agree it could be trimmed some, but you may not be able to at this point without losing that most excellent lip curvature you have going. Looking forward to seeing progress pics. I'll get a few of mine up soon, as well.

Jus' a small update.. I shortened the muzzle by about an inch, and added the ears, but I think they are a little out of place...

Heres a front view of the ears. I'm not happy with them. They remind me too much of a cat. I may just redo the ears out of foam. Yeah, I'm doing a toony/semi realistic look. The reason I decided to make the ears thin was because dogs actually have thin ears, plus Jax the Bat (guy who makes fursuits) used plastic mesh, and I like his style. I donno though. I'm probably jus' gonna redo them though. And as for the eyes, I've found that once you add the fur, the eye socket size will shrink. I'm also gonna be using some pretty fluffy fur, so that'll reduce the size alot. Of course I'll be trimming the fur, but the layer of fabric will make a difference. (i don't have the fur yet. it looks amazing and great quality, but it's 22.99 a yard, and it's from california, and shipping is $30 + $5 for each additional thing. I'm gonna be using rainbow colors so I gotta order a yard of each color basically, and about 2 yards of white, so I think that would add up to around $300+ )

On the note of thin ears: Once you fur them, they'll be much thicker (2 layers of fur, plus any inner-ear fur you're putting in), so I wouldn't worry about the thickness of them. They usually fatten out quite nicely once furred.
On the front view, it looks as if the cheekbones are a bit unbalanced; the one being higher than the other by about half an inch. It shouldn't be much of a problem, but you might want to take it into consideration while furring to possibly balance it up a bit more with trimming, or you could even shave a bit off of the foam before you start furring if you're concerned about it. It's not going to be a major flaw, however. The rest of it looks rather well-balanced.
The colour design sounds interesting; looking very much forward to seeing what you do with it.
Cheers, -Lady Serpent

After cutting off this poor creatures jowls, then attaching a bunch of new foam, I've finally came up with something I'm happy with. I trimmed down the cheeks, kinda re-shaped the muzzle and shortened it some more, made the eyes a little smaller, and added some wire into the lower jaw so I can bend it closed. I didn't make the elastic straps tight enough, so the jaw kinda hung open whenever I tried to move my mouth. The wire works great. Some pictures for ya's: Yes, the wire in the jaw works awesome, but a wee problem is that if I end up rolling around on the ground and fall on my face, or someone gives me an swift, unexpected hug, my jaw will looks like this: Yeeeeah... If that happens, I'll look retarded, and my teeth might break...But I shouldn't have to worry too much, cause I don't think I'll be doing much rough stuff with...unless I trip and fall, or someone pushes me..but yeah. Sorry If I'm boring you guys with all these updates on just the foam work...Fur is expencive...and I don't even have it yet...and I don't even have a solid idea on the color scheme...plus I'm going to Germany in 5 days, so I can't really start on anything...kinda busy packing n' stuff........

This is looking better every time I see. :3 I'm loving the expression. If you're still unsure about the ears, I think it might help if you slide them down maybe half an inch to inch. Going by the concept art in the background, you had them much closer together in the photo than they are in the design.

With the picture, I was trying to keep the ears mostly on the top of the head and not the sides of the head. Actual wolfs have 'fatter' heads that humans (or at least me..), so their ears are on the top of their head and not the sides. And with drawings, you can do whatever, so I guess I gave my wolf a fat head. So I'm either gonna hafta put the ears partially on the top of the head, and partially on the side...Or I could just bulk up the head with some foam so it had a 'fat' head...But I wanna keep the head shape as natural as possible, and not have foam everywhere...
..Guess I jus' have to keep on looking at other peoples fursuit construction photos...

I came back from a two week trip in germany about 6 days ago, then had to go camping for 4 days, so I've only been 'home' for 2 days. Haven't had much time to work on my fursuit. I ordered five yards of 1 and a half inch wide elastic straps so I can make more balaclava style fursuits...and then try and sell them on furbid I also ordered 3 pounds of premo! Sculpey in white, so that'll work great for teeth, claws, and noses (thought I was only getting 6 oz. Oh well. got more than I payed for. Great.) Aaand I ordered some buckram. It is magical. The vision is alot better than chiffon, and doesn't give that "you can see the person behind the mask if you use flash on your camera" effect. The vision isn't as good as mosquito screens that you would find in a door or window (which is what I used for my very first fursuit), but it's the next best thing, and it looks nicer. So theres an update on my online shopping. as for my fursuit, I want to bulk of the cheeks a little bit so it looks kinda like this. I'll need some half inch thick foam cause that'll be alot easier that cutting into 3 inch thick foam. Unfortunately I don't have any half inch thick. So once I eventually bulk of the cheeks, I'll add the ears, do the mouth, and then I'll have to wait untill I can save up a bunch of money to buy fur, plus I haven't even figured out the color scheme yet. I do have $700 right now, but thats going towards a laptop.

Mkay, so I finally got some half inch foam to bump up the cheeks on my fursuit, and I acheived this look, but I think it might be a bit much. Like it kinda makes it look a bit like it has chubby cheeks or something. I want it to look cute but not having a fat face. I donno. Heres what I got: I'm not sure if I should cut and add some foam to make it more like this: I'm pretty sure it'll look a lot better once I finally get the ears on, but for some reason, I'm having too much trouble with them

Thats not very nice. You could at least tell me if there's any way to improve it rather than just criticizing it. Even better, if you don't like it and don't have anything helpful to say, don't post.

To Squatchy: I doubt you meant that offensively, but do be mindful of how other people might take such a comment.
Pash: Yea, it seems that you're more on the right track with what you've got in red, there. I would even aim to make it more 'sharply triangular' if you're going for the look of the green foam head. It's the big, pointy jowels that you're lacking; the one you're working on is quite a bit more rounded, which is what I think is causing it to not look quite the way you're aiming for.
The glasses are interesting on that picture. Are they to be part of the final suit?
Keep it up; it seems to be progressing in the right direction so far.
Cheers, -Lady S.
