Hi everyone, I've been a longtime furry lurking around the message boards and such. I was sure I used to have an account here, but my email address isn't registered. Oh well, I'm part of so many Furry boards it's hard to keep track...

Anyway, I was sort of hoping to maybe make it to a Furry Convention this summer - but Anthrofest in Montreal doesn't exist anymore (damn it) and I can't really travel too far out west because my job requires me to stay in the Eastern-Canada region.

Are there any Furry conventions or get-togethers out East (aside from Camp Feral - can't make it to that one either because of the timing) that I don't know about? I live in NB and know plenty of furries around the area, but nobody wants to get off their butt and come meet up.

Any suggestions?

It's so expensive... and I can't travel much with my job, or take many consecutive days off.

I was hoping to get some people's help to organise a little something around here for us Maritime furs. I gets lonely here, and I don't have anybody to fursuit with Tongue

If I'm not mistaken, its against labor laws to deny vacation time.

I'm hired on a contract basis. For a three month term, I can't take vacation days. It's complicated, but all within the limits of the law.

Anyway... long and short of it is that I can't be away for more than one weekend at a time, which means no travelling to the US for Furcons.

We could always make our own. It could be open to people from the west side of Canada but it can be mainly for the east side. Have it in NB/Moncton since that's like the middle ground between PEI NS NFLD and QUE.

A huge get together sort of thing. I mean, were not useless. It can be done if people really want it

Ok, I'm trying to get started on a few things, hopefully word will get around and I can get some volunteers to help me. First meeting would probably be very low-key, just a few of us meeting together, making friends, etc. Maybe get the ball rolling for a bigger and more official con the following year.

What I can tell you about the meet-up so far:

- It will be sometime after mid-July.

- Likely on a weekend - probably saturday.

- It will be held in Moncton (for this year, anyway. Could switch down the road if it catches on)

- I have an official name for the meet-up which I will be using to hopefully market the event to other furries in the area. Like I said, hopefully it will catch on.

- I'm thinking of developing a logo, and getting some shirts printed to encourage people to come over.

What I need from everyone else are ideas of activities and stuff we could do. I'm only one guy and I can't think of everything myself, so I may need help. I do like the idea of getting fursuits involved, but I know not many of us have some...

Thoughts?

This is from Dan Skunk, posted on the Ontario Furries board! There's a surprising amount of start up cons in the east. This is Dan's compilation!

Furnal Equinox   March 2010   Toronto   http://www.furnalequinox.com/
What The Fur   June 2010   Montreal   http://www.whatthefur.ca/
Bytown Furry Convention   July 31-August 1st, 2010   Ottawa   http://capitalfurs.myfreeforum.org/about1014.html
Condition Furry   August 7-8, 2010   London   http://www.conditionfurry.ca/
Camp Feral!   TBA   TBA   http://www.campferal.org/

You're able to find Camp Ferals date and location on their site. Hope this helps! ( Again. Dan compiled this!  Ugh )

Edit: Manerivic, if you're interested in British Conventions, I'd try consulting either Wikifur, or a board based on the UK, not Canada. ^^

Too Ulysses:

Though I have no experience in ANY of this, I can try and throw my ideas into the pot. If you're serious about starting up something like this, well, carpe' diem. Just that there is a bunch of cons starting up in the Eastern Area. Anyways.

First meeting would probably be very low-key, just a few of us meeting together, making friends, etc.

If that's the case, you might want to plan on starting in a small, cheaper venue that makes more sense based on what you're expecting for the first time. Maybe  resembling more of a meet then a convention, if that makes any sense. I doubt you'll get the turn out to be able to pay for hotel space.

the meet-up so far:
Just curious, but are you interesting in forming a convention? Or are fur meet. The latter may be easier/more appropriate, methinks.

As for the fursuit parts, I'm willing to wager about ten percent of people would be in them, maybe less depending on the size.

As for ideas for activities, I'll compile a list of my ideas. At the same time, it might be a bit better if it was more then one day, unless you are only planning just a meet. And I guess it does depend on the venue.

-Open Microphone ( I love those things Ugh)
-Suggestion Forum ( like, a public forum. Not online!)
-Panels/Workshops on things such as drawing, and sewing, and things that are associated with the fandom.
-Barbecue/some sort of cookout ( with some vegetarian options available).

That's all I have for now, but another thing.

If you are seriously trying for a convention, not a furmeet, you might want to try to get the legal stuff all done before give a date or anything ( insurance and trademarking and such). I didn't say before you finish brainstorming, just before you give a date/rent a space.

That said, I don't /think/ furmeets need the sort of legal mumbo-jumbo, as it's basically just people getting together informally, as opposed to a convention. Which, aren't they regarded as a business ( non profit or otherwise)?

Anyways, best of luck thinking everything over.

Ontario/Quebec is not exactly what I would consider "East" - I'm thinking more NB/NS/PEI. They way I see it, if you're more than a just a few hours drive from the ocean, you're not on the East Coast Tongue

Quick update though. I've been working with a Furry friend from SJ, N.B. and she managed to get a small furmeet going in Saint John. I can't attend, sadly, but it's still a good start. She's expecting about 6-8 people already.
