Anyways apparently some rumors have been starting to circulate and now I have had a few people approach me about. So I am starting to wonder if they are true or not. Right now I am having trouble trying to confirm it.

So basically the rumors that I have been told a few times now is this. Exotic pets are illegal to own as of recently due to some law. But owners of current "exotic" pets must get a permit and register etc. etc. So apparently I am affected by this since I got a Red Tail Boa.

Basically I am just curious if this is true and if anyone has some SOLID INFORMATION that can prove this is true or false. Or if its some law that is in the works right now.
Nah its true, was in the Province the other day I think something like 1200+ species have been banned in BC. I have been looking for the list of them but havent been able to find anything yet...But yes, sadly its true.

Edit: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlifeactreview/cas/  theres the official site

It's an ongoing fight to prevent legistlation on exotics that is otherwise misinformed or illogical.  This one seems to be pretty well-thought-out, however.

You don't need to worry, Wula.  Maggie is a Columbian redtail (Boa Constrictor Imperator (BCI)), which don't get as large as 'true' redtails. (Boa Constrictor Constrictor (BCC)).  BCI's are the most common in the pet trade for boas, and there's little chance of them getting banned through legitimately well-planned exotics bans.

.. Apparently you can still legally own a native wolf species.  Not that I would advocate it, but it's rather interesting.

Thanks for bringing that up!

Oh, I was so upset too when I heard talk of this!

Another law coming into effect is the banning of ALL IMPORTED exotic species into Canada. So what we have now is all we're ever have. Apparently, might even include zoos... Kinda freaked as captive breeding is quite important to many a species. And most exotic pet onwers do keep very good care of their animals.

Zoos will have to apply for permits, but that's not really new. Zoos usually have to deal with numerous permits.

I would think that, considering pets are such a huge market, they wouldn't ban anything considered "popular." It would kind of cut down on some revenue going through the system. Also, as for Zoos...I noticed things like Hippo's and Cheetah's are on that list of "controlled exotics," and I don't know anyone with a hippo in the back yard, so I think that DOES pertain to zoos. I agree with LS, zoos would have to deal with all sorts of permits and things to have the animals they do have.
I wouldn't get too scared by any rumors going around about future policies. There are usually ways around them.
Also, LS, did you notice Canis Lupus on there? Grey wolves are on the list of "controlled." Doesn't that mean you can't own them? Maybe I misunderstood...

It lists the family Canidae, but excludes native wolf species.  (Along with a heck of a lot of other canid species):

Family Canidae – [such as dingos, jackals and raccoon-dogs] except:
Alopex lagopus – [arctic fox]
Canis latrans – [coyote] that are native species
Canis lupus – [wolf] that are native species
Canis lupus familiarus – [domestic dog]
Urocyon cinereoargenteus – [grey fox]
Vulpes macrotis – [kit fox]
Vulpes vulpes – [red fox]

Odd, for sure.  It also seems that many fox species are considered common pets these days.

... And apparently you can legally own Grizzly bears, too.  THAT sounds safe.

Maybe they allow the bears due to lobbying from circuses and whatnot. Wink
