When you hit the "Reply" button and get into the "Post reply" page, there's a thing called "Additional Options..." just under and to the left of the text box where you type things out. It has a '+' sign next to it. Click that and you should get the option of attaching a file.

It generally helps, too, to have it uploaded to a photo site like 'Photobucket'.  If you link from sites like Furaffinity or others, they don't always display properly. (or at all.)

Photobucket, imageshack, or even flickr. For that Matty will need to use "Insert Image" button that's on the far left and right above the Smiley tag above the text box. Inside each of these brackets -->  [][/]  <-- will be "img". Where the brackets go ][ you want to add in the direct image URL between them, which should end in a .jpg or .png or .gif.

It might be because of the image's size or dimensions. The page you upload your icon on should list the proper size (both pixels and KB) that the image has to be to work. You can adjust it in photoshop, paint (depending), or probably even with whatever program came with your scanner.

Has it been saved as a .tiff? It's a common file type for scanners, but not well supported on forums. Kick the thing into a .jpg and get the DPI down under 300.

If you want the basics for scan, cut, crop, and format use IrFanView. It's tiny and useful in a quick pinch.

It's been around a long time and has always touted itself as being able to fit on a floppy. It's completely standalone and very small, but still powerful enough to do quite a bit on the fly. It's not an art program, but it is an image editing program.
