iv talked to a few people about it already but non have really gotten back to me yet so ill ask here now. i have a AMD atholong 3700+ 64 bit CPU on a asus A8N-E, i got a water cooling system on it alread, which includes my graphics card, so cooling is not a problem. i got it at 2.54 ghz. i want to push it to 3.0 GHZ + at most 3.2. my question is, how can i saftly get it to that and mantain it at that speed?? what programs do i need to keep it running in a safe zone, or monitore it there? any advice will help and please dont say "get a new computer" i can't affored it, that is why im doing it this way. and i am a gammer so i want a fast computer to seport my game. im a geek, what can i say

There's no easy way to do it. Most software solutions have come about on the AM2 boards. If you have an old 939, I do hate to say it, but grab up an AM2+ board and Black Edition CPU. $150-200 max. My Gigabyte board has software that's just a few clicks in the OS to OC it. There's no fiddling in the BIOS. As far as I remember, that's been pretty much unheard of from the 939 on back. 64 X2 info and steps: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.aspx?catid=28&threadid=1497607&enterthread=y

Getting ready for class here, but you can overclock just about anything. You typically overclock your CPU from the BIOS, because you need to adjust your memory dividers in order to obtain a stable FSB without hitting a wall too soon. A lot of times the limiting factor will actually be other components of the system and not the processor itself, unless, as mentioned, you have an unlocked multiplier.
Graphics cards are typically overclocked through software, such as the Nvidia control panel that comes with their drivers. I'm able to almost double the performance of my card through overclocking, raising core clocks from 350 to 650 and memory from 333 to 433. All benchmarks show an almost +75% increase; previous areas rendering 30 FPS now render around 55 FPS.
Good luck, perhaps I can shed more light on the situation later

I've always done my CPU overclocking through the BIOS... With a socket 939 board, I'm not sure if AMD Overdrive would be available; I think that was only for much newer motherboards/CPUs. Keep in mind that your cooling won't always be the limiting factor for what sort of overclock you can achieve. In your case, your ceiling will most likely be dictated by how much voltage your parts will be capable of feeding each other. Going to 3.0GHz is GOING to necessitate a voltage increase. As for stability, just do it carefully; raise the clock speed ONE step at a time, then boot it, and run some tests. While not comprehensive, SuperPi (found here: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36) is a favorite basic test, as well as benchmark, among overclockers.

I totally missed this thread!
Im currently running my Q6600 at 3.6 stable 24/7 and yeah...theres alot of trial and error with overclocking but you eventually get it right :3

Nowadays I don't think overclocking your CPU accomplishes much except to instill bragging rights upon you. Your GPU, sure, you can squeeze a few more MHz out of because when it comes to games that's what's really doing it for you. But overclocking a plain old CPU is like climbing Mount Everest now. You do it because you can, not because it'll really do anything for you. 2.4GHz Quad Core, 2gb RAM, nVidia 8500GT. Not top of the line. Nothing overclocked. It'll still run TF2 just fine at 1440x900 with most detail. Runs EVE at max resolution and full detail (except HDR) at full speed. Good enough for me. =) But then, some people do equate fps with penis size.

Well I've got a 2.8GHz quad core, 4gb RAM, and two Radeon HD 3870's. Still not top of the line, some bios overclocking on the CPU. Oblivion runs perfectly at 1680x1050, full detail, and 4x AA. But I'm not bragging about that, because everyone knows that your post count is the only thing that dictates your penis size.
